Current Status

Volkswagen Group Australia (Volkswagen) is pleased to announce that approval has been received from the Federal Government for the great majority of vehicles affected by the voluntary recall.

With the recent approval of some 70,000 cars in addition to almost 9,000 Amarok cars approved in February, updates for almost 80,000 diesel vehicles will soon be available to customers. This includes the 2.0 litre Volkswagen Golf, Passat, Jetta, Tiguan and Caddy models, and the 2.0 litre ŠKODA Superb, Octavia and Yeti models.

In coming weeks, Volkswagen will be writing to customers inviting them to make an appointment at a Volkswagen dealership to have the approved technical measures applied to their vehicles.

Understanding the update

The update for the majority of affected vehicles is an update to the vehicle software. This adjustment will be relatively quick and has been made possible with advances in diesel engine technology. Some vehicles will additionally be fitted with a minor hardware update. An overview of the technical measures can be viewed on our global YouTube channel.

What happened?

Software installed in the engine control units of some Volkswagen vehicles fitted with an EA189 diesel engine permitted different nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) depending on whether the vehicle was operating under a laboratory test cycle or operating outside of the test cycle. Cars affected

Only certain Volkswagen vehicles with a 1.6L or 2.0L 4 cylinder TDI engine, manufactured between 2008-2015. For specific vehicles and years please refer to the Q&A below.

Only certain vehicles fitted with a 1.6 litre or 2.0 litre diesel EA189 engine manufactured from about 2008 onwards are affected.

Petrol engines are not affected.

To see if your vehicle is affected, please visit http://volkswagendieselinfo.com.au and click on the “Check if my vehicle is affected” section. You will need your VIN number, which can be found in front of your service book or at the bottom of your windscreen (as you look into the vehicle from the outside).

The chassis number (VIN) is the only certain way to identify the vehicles. With the VIN, you are able to check on our website if your car is affected. Petrol engines are not affected by the NOx issue.

The update, once it is rolled out in Australia, will involve an update to the software in both the 1.6L and 2.0L variants of the EA189 diesel engine. In some vehicles, a minor hardware update will also be installed. The software update implements changes to the software on the engine control unit.

The type approval authorities in Europe conducted a review and certified that following the update the fuel consumption figures and CO2 emissions originally listed by the manufacturer were confirmed. They further certified that previous engine performance, maximum torque and previous noise emissions remain unchanged.

We are confident in the effectiveness of the software update, based on the experience of approx. 1,700,000 customers worldwide across the various brands who have had the update implemented to date; testing performed by type approval authorities in Europe; and the results of independent before and after testing of emissions and fuel consumption by three of the world's oldest and respected independent motorists' organisations in Germany, Switzerland and Austria and one of Germany's most widely read car enthusiasts' magazines, Autozeitung.

We have been in constructive dialogue with the ACCC and other representatives of the Australian Government about the update since it was approved for implementation in Australia in August 2016. They want us to make sure that you understand that the update is voluntary and choosing to have the update does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law (including your rights if there should be any unforeseen effects over the longer term).

The software update and, where necessary, the installation of a minor hardware component will be provided free of charge and be installed in less than an hour.

Emission regulations and vehicle standards vary from country to country. Regulations governing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions limits for vehicles in the United States are much stricter than those in other parts of the world, including Australia, and their diesel engine variants also differ significantly.

In Australia, we are conducting a voluntary recall to update your vehicle’s engine management software and where necessary, install a minor hardware component.

Neither Volkswagen nor Audi will be buying back any cars in Australia. The regulations governing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission limits are much stricter for vehicles in the USA than in other parts of the world and the engine variants are also very different. As a result, diesel engine technology has to meet much more stringent overall requirements in the USA, which also means that the technical updates for the affected vehicles are more complex. The technical updates have not yet been approved in the USA.

In addition, we hold the view that there is no legal basis for compensation or customer actions in this connection in other parts of the world. All vehicles affected are technically safe. They can be driven on roads without any limitations and can still be sold.

Implementation of the necessary technical measures is being carried out in accordance with the timetable and action plan coordinated with the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). At the same time, we currently anticipate that the affected vehicles’ modification will have no negative impact on residual value.

Minor price fluctuations are totally normal for used cars, regardless of vehicle type. What we are observing at present in the market for used diesel vehicles is, dependent on life cycle and general market trends, within the normal range of fluctuation. We are working on the assumption that the modification of the vehicles affected will not affect the residual value. Neither do we have any reason to believe that dealers who are not Volkswagen partners are getting lower sales prices for the vehicles concerned than authorised Volkswagen dealers.

Volkswagen believes that the best outcome for customers is the implementation of the technical measures, and strongly recommends that the technical measures for the voluntary recall are applied to customers' vehicles. All affected customers will be contacted by Volkswagen asking them to arrange an appointment with their workshop. In the meantime, your vehicle remains safe to drive.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have instituted proceedings against Volkswagen, alleging Volkswagen engaged in false, misleading or deceptive conduct in relation to diesel vehicle emission claims.

Volkswagen Group Australia is defending the claims made by the ACCC and does not think that the court action will provide any practical benefit to consumers because software updates for cars affected by the voluntary recall are or soon will be available.

Volkswagen is in the process of implementing software updates for vehicles affected by the voluntary diesel emissions recall and strongly recommends that customers elect to have the technical measures applied to their vehicles.

The recall work for the affected Amarok is a straightforward software update of the vehicles engine control unit

The results of this update have been approved by the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany and independently tested by TÜV NORD (technical inspection association) – both confirm there is no material impact to vehicle performance or fuel economy and that the vehicles remain safe to drive. These results have been accepted by the relevant Australian governing bodies.
